50 Stories: Angel One Appeal

In 1989, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service sought the support of the community through the Angel One Appeal with the goal to raise funds for the purchase of the Service’s first twin-engine helicopter to replace the Service’s single engine Bell 206L Longranger.

At the time, as safety standards were evolving, having a twin-engine aircraft was viewed as crucial for flying over built-up areas and landing on elevated helipads in Sydney.

The model chosen was the SA 365C3 Dauphin, a light twin engine helicopter, one of only seven manufactured with skidded landing equipment designed specifically for offshore oil platforms.

The appeal, which ran for two years, was a resounding success enabled by the community rallying together. This sense of collective ownership over the aircraft continues to this day, with proud locals fondly referring to the helicopters as ‘angels’.

The acquisition of the Dauphin significantly enhanced the Service’s capabilities. It allowed for faster flight speeds, a two-person winch, and extended offshore reach of up to 100 nautical miles offshore, all while providing the added safety of a twin-engine capability.

Reflecting on the Angel One Appeal, the continued community support remains a source of pride for the Service. That support laid the foundation for ongoing partnerships and established a legacy of generosity that still drives the Service today.

Today, alongside the NSW Government, through the NSW Ministry of Health and NSW Ambulance, Westpac Bank, sponsors, business partners and the community, all collectively provide the funds to ensure that the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service can deliver world-class aeromedical emergency support services to the communities of Northern NSW.

Thank you to all those who have supported the Service over the years.
