As we approach the end of another year, it’s easy to catch yourself reflecting on some of the highlights from 2023. I can honestly say that as the Operations Manager, apart from all of the life-changing moments our Service has been witness to with the patients we’ve flown, it has been the incredible generosity of our supporters like you that stands out in my mind the most.
Your support, despite the growing cost of living pressures, has helped our unsung heroes in Engineering to perform back-to-back deep level maintenance inspections on our fleet, and enabled our Critical Care Medical Teams to perform over 1,250 missions so far this year. Our aircraft are likely to travel over 500,000kms with over 2,000 flying hours by years’ end…all because of you!
All of these numbers aside, what really hits home for me is the incredible act of helping someone you don’t know in what could be the most pivotal moment in their life. The fact that our supporters value this notion so highly is not lost on all of us here at your Rescue Helicopter Service.
It’s people like Steve from Colambatti near Kempsey who come to mind that have benefited from our shared values. Steve fell from a roof while trying to put a tarp over renovations to prevent some anticipated heavy rain from getting inside. Steve’s wife Liz, who was undergoing treatment for breast cancer at the time, didn’t have the mobility to assist Steve as he lay motionless.
It wasn’t long before the Rescue Helicopter landed on a nearby paddock at their property. Steve had 11 broken ribs and a fractured lower back. Steve spent a week in hospital and remarkably was back at work driving the local school bus 6 weeks later!
Steve and Liz’s grandchild, 4-year-old Vance, now refers to us as ‘Grandpa’s helicopter’ when he sees us flying overhead.
The lasting impact that your support will have on Steve’s life is beyond measure, but what we do know is Steve’s enduring appreciation for the support you give that helped to bring the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service when he needed it most.
With summer on the horizon, we will soon be entering one of our busiest times of the year. To help us to support you, your family and local community, we invite you to donate once again knowing full well that the next person we rescue will be forever grateful for the gift you give them!
Thank you for your support!
PS: Everything we achieve is only because of people like you. If you are thinking of taking your support to a new level, why not become a ‘HeliHelper’ by starting a monthly $5 donation to feel more connected to every mission we fly! Thank you for making our Service possible for your local community
