In a true show of grit, generosity and community spirit, the Paxton Ride reached new heights this year, raising an astounding $93,332 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, eclipsing last year’s event total of $75,000.
The 2025 figure represents the highest total in the event’s 19-year history, which has now raised over $243,000 for the Service.
92 motorcyclists joined the two-day ride from the Central Coast, through state forests and culminating on Sunday in the Hunter Valley, with riders united by a shared passion for riding and a deep connection to the lifesaving service they support.
Among them was Derek Van Eden, a familiar face to many of the Service’s supporters. Derek was hit by a car over 7 years ago and had to be airlifted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. He spent three months in hospital recovering, and his first stop after being discharged was to visit and thank the crew who saved his life. That moment transformed the casual ride into a heartfelt annual fundraiser experience, inspired a deep commitment to give back to the Service.
His powerful rescue story, featured on the Service’s YouTube channel, has become a source of inspiration for riders and supporters alike.
“The Paxton Ride has been going for the last 19 years, starting with just a few mates on a two-day ride through the state forest,” said ride coordinator Simon Debono.
“After Derek’s accident, it became about more than just mates on bikes – it became about giving back to the people who saved his life. We’ve now raised nearly $250,000, and we’re not stopping anytime soon.”
The event continues to grow in scale and spirit, thanks to the tireless efforts of Simon, Derek, and fellow organiser Darrell Keeling. From forest trails to the ride’s conclusion at the Grand Neath Hotel, the ride blends camaraderie and cause, drawing in new riders every year.
With this year’s result of over $93,000, the team’s collective fundraising total since 2019 has now surpassed $243,000 – a testament to what a small, dedicated group can achieve.
“It’s not just about the ride,” said Debono. “It’s about the people, the community, and giving back to the Service that gives so much to others.”
